Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dances of the Olden Time: Arranged for the Pianoforte The jig, like the Hornpipe, is named after an ancient instrument, which in this case was a small fiddle. The. Jig as a dance is generally in 0-8 or 9-8 time. And is popular at the present day in Ireland. It is danced by a man and woman facing each other. They dance in recognised step, and perform some evolutions without contact with each other. It can hardly be questioned that the jig has formerly been a different dance from what is now practised under that name. It appears always to have been one in which much exertion was required, and it is possible that the Galliard was an original form of it. Kemp's jig, published in the 17th century, was named after a certain Kemp, who in 1591) danced from London to Norwich in nine days. He wrote an account of this feat, and calls the dance a Morris, but it was probably only a Morris in the sense that he had bells on his knees. The step was probably to a jig tune, and quite likely may have been the one printed at page 28 of present volume.
