Book excerpt: Tree islands in the Florida Everglades provide important habitat for wildlife, especially terrestrial mammals. More information about the relationship between wildlife use of tree islands and spatial and temporal variables is needed to better manage these resources as part of Everglades restoration. This study employed camera trapping to determine effects of changing marsh water levels, tree island size, temperature, and rainfall on small and medium-sized mammals in the Everglades. Camera height was also tested for its effect on detection of each species. Camera traps were deployed on 68 tree islands over the course of almost 11 months. Tree island use by Odocoileus virginianus (White-tailed Deer) was positively affected by higher water levels but detection was not affected by camera height. Use by Sylvilagus palustris (Marsh Rabbit) was also positively affected by water levels and they were detected more often when camera height was lower. Lynx rufus (Florida Bobcat) use of tree islands may be correlated with lower average daily temperatures but total rainfall and camera height do not seem to have an effect. Use of tree islands by Procyon lotor (Northern Raccoon) and Oryzomys palustris (Marsh Rice Rat) was not related to any of the variables tested. When all species were combined, higher water levels and lower camera height resulted in more use and detection of wildlife on tree islands, respectively. This information can be used to inform biologists on managing wildlife populations that will be affected by Everglades restoration.
