He had found that in frogs whose cervical spinal cord was cut, digi talis produced very marked lowering of the pulse with great lessening of arterial pressure, and believed this to show that the slowing of the pulse was not due to the increased arterial pressure. Ackerman, in 1870, also supported the vagus view, by finding that when atropia had been previously given, digitalis failed to slow the pulse.
