Book excerpt: Through the 1950s and into the 1960s there was a strong sense that the church was on the move, that it was called to make its witness in a rapidly changing social setting. Following the 1960 formation of The American Lutheran Church, the Youth Department through its leadership training programs, its Luther League centrality, and its teaching materials such as ¿Called to be Human¿ provided an important public voice for the renewal that was taking place. They knew they were doing a remarkable thing. Not everyone in the church agreed and was supportive of the renewal, or ¿course change.¿ The staff of the Youth Department found themselves in the middle of a firestorm. This account provides a Youth Department perspective on a turbulent, yet hopeful time in the church.
