Book excerpt: This publication follows the tradition of a German Festschrift, consisting of essays written in honor of Dr. Brown and her twenty-plus years of service in research, writing, publishing and governance for the Memorial Foundation of the Germanna Colonies in Virginia, Inc. The essays were written by contemporaries of Dr. Brown covering topics of interest to all Germanna families, including the European fundraising travels by Hebron Lutheran's first pastor, the history and struggles of Johann Justus Albrecht who recruited the German immigrants to Virginia in 1714, the life and works of America's foremost pipe organ designer, David Tannenberg, who created the organ that has served the Hebron church since the early 1800s, research that pinpoints the site of Hebron's first Glebhaus, an important distinction of Germanna's immigrant Peter Heide, sometimes confused with a man of similar name from New York, and the tragic history of a Germanna ancestor who was accused and imprisoned as a witch in Germany in the late 1500s.
