Book excerpt: Excerpt from Index Catalogue of the Gorbals District Library The Gorbals District Library is the first of the libraries to be organ ized. It is placed in the building erected for the Corporation Baths in Main Street, ss, and occupies the whole of the two upper floors of the front building, which are rented from the Baths Committee. The ground floor is otherwise occupied. Each floor consists of an apart ment, 133 feet long by 21 feet broad, with side rooms, etc. The first floor is devoted to the lending library and a reading room for boys, the second floor contains the general reading and news room, and a reading room for women and girls. In the general reading and news room there is provided a collection of 600 volumes of reference books and works in general literature. These are placed in an open book-case, and may be consulted without any written application. They are intended for use within the building only, and are not available for circulation. There is altogether accommodation for about 300 readers present at one time; and for a lending library of volumes. The number of volumes now in the library is including the collection of reference books on the Open shelves in the reading room, and the books for juveniles in the evening reading rooms for boys and girls.
