The Brainerd Mission was established in 1817 by the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. Brown was not only its first convert but its first native missionary and teacher. She died very young of tuberculosis. The Memoir contains the expected biographical information but also weaves into the narrative selections of her writings, that is, her diary and letters. The frontispiece ngraving of Brown in her sick bed was drawn by John Ritto Penniman (1782-1841) and engraved by William Hoogland (1794 or 1795-1832).
