Book excerpt: The development of a Regional Update Model (RUM) by the Meteorological Services Research Branch as progressed to the testing of a semi-Lagrangian version of the Reed 1000 mb forecast model in which topography, earth vorticity, explicit forecast of 1000 mb vorticity and vertical velocity at 750 mb is included. Development of a more sophisticated version of the RUM using the Reed model in which physical effects are included is reported on. Finally plans to extend the RUM concept using primitive equation models are indicated.
