Book excerpt: Paige Persnickety wants a pet. Her playmates have pets which they share at preschool each week during Pet Day. Paige repeatedly begs her mommy and daddy for a pet. Their answer is always "No." They explain to Paige that the timing is not right, and urge her to practice a little more patience. However, they also tell her that someday, when the timing is best for all, she'll be able to get a pet. One day, Paige's mommy and daddy reveal that they have a surprise. She asks "Is it a present? Is it a pet?" They say "No, it is neither." Anxiously, Paige inquires, "WHAT IS IT?" When Paige learns the answer she screams and cries and storms off to her bedroom. Sadly, she feels like it just isn't fair. Paige's parents gently prompt her to be a little bit more patient. Eventually, Paige's mommy and daddy come to preschool with a gift. Her preschool classmates plead for her to open the box. Paige opens the box and is delighted to find that her wish has finally become a reality. The charming illustrations display Paige's array of classmates and their unique pets. The illustrations also capture Paige's range of emotions throughout her persistence, perseverance and patience to obtain a pet.
