A crop of wheat pays better than any other crop; and if crops of wheat, equal to such as are raised now after clover or summer-fallow, could be raised every year, with no moreexpence or trouble than they now require, every farmer would be eager to raise them: as that, however, cannot be effected, inferior crops are raised, or the land is left without a crop: wherever, ' however, these can be avoided, they should. Turnips have.taken place of bare fallow ou light Jand: beans and tares have rendered bare fallow less frequently necessary on strong lands. Thus the evil or disadvantage of being obliged to leave a portion of land every year without a crop, is in a great measure done away; but to bring in sum. mer-fallow, where it was not necessary, would justly be deemed Yolirtiturily recalling the evil from which we were freed; and to have recourse to green crops unnecessarily, must be considered as acting with a want of economy similar in nature, though not so gieat in degree, except in those cases and situations M'here one reen crop succeeding another, will pay better than if the green crop had been succeeded by a crop of corn. In defence of this practice it is urged, that a succession of. green crops will keep the land green and in good condition: out it may be remarked, that if the land be well ploughed and harrowed, and If these operations be performed frequently, and at proper seasons, a green crop every other year on light lands, and the occasional introduction of a complete summer. fallow, ou strong lands, will effectually keep Hie land clean and in good condition, if the land is foul or poor, green crops are more likely to leave it more so, than to remedy these evils: no stubbles Herein a worse-condition this...
