Book excerpt: The National Register of Historic Places, created in 1966, was established to document historically and architecturally significant resources in the United States of America. This project focuses on the lengthy process of creating a National Register District in a city that's period of significance has passed but that is currently focusing on revitalization efforts. Beginning with a seed of an idea being planted during a volunteer committee meeting throughout the entire process of research, writing, and consulting with the Ohio State Historic Preservation Office, this thesis will conclude with the final draft of the National Register nomination being submitted to the National Park Service. In addition to discussion of the process, this narrative will explain the significance of the National Register of Historic Places, the Main Street program and the Downtown Painesville Organization, and how a register listing can help a city remember its past while moving towards the future.
