Because 'of this the planters are little acquainted with the insect life to be found in their cane fields. The cane-borer (sphenophorus obscuras Boisd.) has been the most destructive and for that reason the one most generally known. It is safe to say that the borer and the hopper will not be the only pests with which the planters will have to contend in the fu ture. With the profits of the sugar industry decreasing it will be necessary to study more closely the various insect pests of the cane, and'there is demand on the part of the planters for practical, untechnical information regarding them.
