The first section of the study describes the structure of the community; the second part discusses its scholarship. The objectives of this study are to identify where and who the Americanists are, and to examine the images of the United States they present. This data comes from both American and Chinese sources. In the early 80s, the USIA commissioned a number of American scholars to travel to China and make reports on the state of American Studies in the disciplines of economics, history, law and government, and literature.
