Consequently it must depend on having its food prepared for it We find fungi (singular fungus) therefore, growing wherever organic matter is present which will serve as food, and where the conditions of heat and moisture are favorable. Many fungi live on dead plant and animal matter and are known as saprophytes. Among these may be classed some of the toadstools, mushrooms, puffballs, common mould, etc. Others live on the tissues of living plants or animals and are known as parasites.
