Book excerpt: This strategy document presents the Government of Canada's policy statement for the management of estuarine coastal & marine ecosystems. The document first establishes the context in which Canada's oceans strategy is being developed & implemented. It then sets out a policy framework based on the principles of sustainable development, integrated management, and the precautionary approach, and identifies three policy objectives or outcomes for the advancement of oceans management activities: understanding & protecting the marine environment, supporting sustainable economic opportunities, and international leadership. Finally, it outlines actions for implementing the strategy under each policy objective. Appendices contain examples of integrated management initiatives currently under way on all three coasts.
