Book excerpt: The purpose of this MA paper is to research when and why learners and English teachers switch between mother tongue and foreign language in the classroom, in our case the English language, and what teachers think about switching code during teaching. The research was conducted at the elementary school Vinica. In order to obtain the information needed to achieve this goal, I conducted three observations in the 7th, 8th and 9th grade of the elementary school, total of nine observations. I also interviewed the English teacher. In the theoretical part, I examined the literature in detail, and on the basis of this I prepared an observation sheet and questions for the interview. In the empirical part, we observed individual English lessons with the help of the observation sheet, and after the observations, we interviewed the English teacher. During the observation itself, the main focus was centred mainly on the use and type of code switching, communication between learners and teachers, the use of a foreign language while conversing and the occurrence of discrimination among observed learners. The research findings are that learners from Croatia used code-switching techniques more frequently than other learners at the English lessons. We also noticed that code-switching occurred more frequently in the 7th and 8th grade and less in the 9th grade. The English teacher also used code-switching techniques more in the 7th and 8th grade and almost none in the 9th grade. Although, there was no sign of any kind of discrimination among learners.
