Book excerpt: A facsimile reprint of Usque's literary work which chronicles, by way of a pastoral dialogue, the history of oppression and suffering of the Jews in the Iberian peninsula, their expulsion and forced conversion, and the tragedy of the emigres and of the Conversos. The English introduction, "A Jewish Classic in the Portuguese Language" (pp. 15-112), describes how the Spanish Jews fled to Portugal after the 1492 expulsion, and how they were stripped of their properties and enslaved in 1493 under King João II. An expulsion decree was issued in 1496, but all the Jews were forcibly converted in 1497 because their emigration would have hurt Portugal's economy. Still held as Jews by the populace, suspected of Judaizing, Portuguese Conversos were subject to the Lisbon pogrom in 1506, to emigration prohibitions (1521, 1532, 1535), and to persecutions by the Inquisition beginning in 1536. Refers, also, to Converso messianic movements in Portugal.
