Book excerpt: The theory and research on constructive controversy indicates that this method has high potential for supporting innovation in organizations but there is a lack of intervention studies so far. In an applied research project a practical intervention design for controversy was developed and applied in innovation teams of five organizations in Switzerland. Preliminary results of a pre- post- questionnaire indicate that constructive controversy conducted according a instructed procedure has a positive relationship to decision quality, commitment to decision, and impact on innovation. Positive goal interdependence and trust appear as conditions of the teams' ability to have an open-minded dialogue. This study encourages further intervention studies, a field that has not been addressed very much so far.
