Biochemists exchanged information relevant to the systemic and local muscosal immunity system provided to the newborn by the mammary gland and its secretions. Topics include the functions of the mucosal immune system and the gut-associated and bronchial-associated lymphoid tissues, the transfer of maternal antibodies to fetus or newborn, andthe constituents of human colostrum and milk, such as immunoglobulins M, G, A, E and D, and cells B, T, NK and K. Questions which remain unanswered include stimulus and location of B-cell switching; the origin and acquisition of T-cell recognition patterns; cell migration and binding; maternal cell colonization of the infant; the presence of lymphokines and monokines; and the roles of basophils, most cells and esinophils.
