The purpose has been to provide an introduction to the subject, which may later be followed by intensive study in more detailed works upon the various branches. This gives a general view of the subject as a whole, and is the natural method of approach. The Author has derived much assistance from a number of books which deal more fully with various portions of the subject. These are mentioned at the ends of articles or chapters to which they specially relate. They should be studied by students desiring a more complete presentation of the subject.
