Book excerpt: Diabetes is a serious chronic disease that has been one of the top ten leading causes of death in recent years. Constant monitoring of blood glucose is a key factor in controlling this disease. Typical self-monitoring devices require a blood drop which involves finger pricking. Due to this inconvenience, noninvasive blood glucose monitoring has been an area of great interest in the past decade. In this project, microwave resonators have been investigated in detail as proposed sensors for noninvasive blood glucose monitoring devices. Using Ansys HFSS (high-frequency structure simulator) software, several resonators have been designed, simulated, and compared. Furthermore, an experimental artificial human tissue model was created for four different blood glucose concentrations and was tested with two fabricated sensors: a microstrip ring resonator at 2.4 GHz and a complementary circular spiral resonator (CCSR) at 2.0 GHz. The measured results show the sensitivity of the resonator's S-parameters to changes in dielectric properties corresponding blood glucose levels.
