He has also been an ardent advocate of the 'One Medicine' concept, convinced that the continued progression of medicine necessitates a concerted interrelatedness between veterinary medicine and human medicine in the challenging quest for the prevention and control of zoonotic diseases that the global poor are most at risk from. He has had adjunct faculty appointments at both veterinary and medical institutions, and has published extensively over the years, receiving a Superior Service Award from the Secretary of Agriculture in 1990, 'For notable authorship which has brought national and international recognition to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Food Safety and Inspection Service, ' an agency that he served for twenty-five years.
