Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Quartermaster General of the State of New Jersey, for the Year 1906 The Chief of Ordnance, U. S. Army, in his last annual report, in speaking of the importance of instruction to militia batteries equipped with these modern guns, says: The organization of the Regular Army. Now provides for thirty batteries of mobile artillery. For anything like a first-class war at least 250 batteries would be required. It is apparent that there is no hope of the maintenance in the time of peace of even a fair pro portion of this number in the regular service. The reliance of the country must, therefore, be largely upon organizations of some kind of which the members shall be self-supporting and devoting only a portion of their time to military training.
