The saying challenges the popular misconception, which has sometimes manifested in judicial discourse about indigenous communities, that indigenous cultures must be frozen in time in order for their rights to deserve protection. But why is it important to keep traditions alive and what are the common struggles of indigenous communities? To offer us some perspectives, the dodem comes to life in Otter's Journey (UBC Press, 2018) as she leaves her home in the Anishinaabe Nation (in what is now southwestern Ontario, Canada) and swims across the oceans to learn about efforts to revitalise indigenous languages and laws around the world.
