Following his death in 1844, it became a commonplace book. Many of the newspaper articles included are from New York papers. At least one British paper was used as well. The variety of articles and drawings includes both domestic and foreign topics, such as reprints of John Trumbull's Revolutionary War paintings, drawings of immigrants, a couple Polka dancing, and a drawing and article about the French castle, Fontainebleau. One drawing depicts The Law Carried Around the Synagogue of the Jews. One interesting article is about the Ancient Use of Prussic Acid.
