Book excerpt: Description: This series (2 folders) consists of letters and V-mails from the service of Francis Clark, who served in the 120th Engineer Combat Battalion in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations and European Theater of Operations. Within the series is a classification card, letters he wrote while at basic training, and letters he wrote while overseas. In June 1942, F. Clark was training at Fort Devens, Massachusetts. He spent a brief amount of time at Camp Wheeler, Georgia, only to return to Fort Devens. At the end of 1942, F. Clark is stationed at Fort Drum, New York, and remains there until January 1943. He is then stationed at Camp Pickett, Virginia until May. His unit shipped out to North Africa in June 1943 and participated in Operation Husky and Operation Avalanche in July 1943. F. Clark was stationed in Italy after the invasion of Italy and remained there until August 1944, when his unit was then a part of Operation Dragoon in Southern France. He eventually made it to Germany in March 1945 and remained there until August 1945. Also included in the series are two photographs of F. Clark during his service.;Letters, postcards, and V-mails to Inez Clark and her youngest children from her three eldest sons and brother-in-law, who served in separate engineering battalions in the United States Army in the European Theater of Operations and the Pacific Theater of Operations. The collection is arranged into five series: I. Personal correspondence from Francis Clark, 1942-1945; II. Personal correspondence from Horace Clark, 1941-1945; III. Personal correspondence from Lawrence Clark, 1942-1945; IV. Personal correspondence from Clarence Clark, 1942-1944; and V. Ration books, 1942-1945.
