Book excerpt: "Horace Wrinch and his wife Alice arrived in Hazelton on the Skeena River in northern British Columbia in 1990. There he built the first hospital in the northern interior, serving both Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities. For the next thirty-years, he became widely respected not only as a doctor and surgeon but also as a Methodist minister, farmer, magistrate, community leader and progressive politician. In 1907, he instituted a form of health insurance for the Hazelton community. In the 1920's, he was a two-term president of the newly established B.C. Hospital Association and a two-term Liberal member of the provincial legislature. Whine in the legislature, he championed publicly funded health insurance. When he died in 1939, the Vancouver Sun called him "the best known and most beloved man in Northern British Columbia."
