It lasted from June 1 through October 15, 1905, attracted about 1.6 million people, and had exhibits from 21 countries. It arrived just a year after the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis (which was very successful), and organizers believed that a fair held in Portland could do wonders for its reputation. And as a side benefit, the growth of the city increased by over 100,000 residents between 1905 and 1910, which was attributed to the fair.
