The effects of the inhomogeneity of the shock front have been analyzed. It was found that the ions are heated up and that the resonant particles see a larger component of the electric field in the direction of he inhomogeneity. From the linear stability it was found that the fastest growing unstable modes inside the shock front are the beam-cyclotron and pure cyclotron modes. The effects of high beta values on these instabilities have been investigated. A new theory has been developed to handle the non-linear evolution of unstable modes. Equations governing the structure of the shock front valid for low as well as high Mach numbers have been derived. (Author).
