The breeds name, 'Barbet, ' comes from the French word 'barbe' which means 'beard, ' which is a reference to the breeds unique coat. Traditionally, the breed has been used as a gun dog, a guard dog and as a sailor's assistant. The Barbet is considered to be a rare breed and can only be officially registered in France, Holland, Germany, Sweden and Canada. However the breed is gaining popularity as a household pet, mainly in Scandinavian countries and North America, due to its flexibility and affectionate personality. The breed comes in a variety of colorations but it is most common for a Barbet's coat to be black, white and black or brown. It is not uncommon for the Barbet to have white paws or a white crest of hair on its chest. The breed has a very unique and characteristic coat. The Barbet's coat is very long and thick and must be groomed on a regular basis to avoid matting. If a Barbet's coat is not groomed on a regular basis it is not uncommon for their coat to shed huge chunks of hair. The Barbet is known to be friendly, obedient, intelligent and affectionate. The Barbet is very family orientated and will want to spend its time in the same room as its family members. The breed is also known to be very gentle which makes it a perfect for families with small children or the elderly. Before purchasing any pet it is important to understand that as a pet owner you are responsible for the care and wellbeing of your pet.
