Those who are familiar with his works, the titles of which are quoted in my list Of authorities, will readily see how much I owe to him. Wherever possible I have gone to original sources, Spanish, Latin or Arabic, but I have found that to differ from him was rash, to improve upon his work impossible. I trust I shall not be accused of presumption in giving my own translation of some passages from Arabic authors quoted in his works. I am aware that as an Arabic scholar he was unrivalled, but it has seemed to me that English often admits of a more literal rendering than French.
