At the centre of Jessica's investigative journey is a secret Order, the Order of the Dragon, run by an influential Thai-Chinese dynasty, determined that the Asian century has finally begun, that its time has now come to assume control of the world's precious resources, starting with securing fashion's most valuable commodity, the most premium leather in the world - crocodile skins. The glitzy, glamorous world of fashion is contrasted greatly to Jessica's upbringing, her own sense of purpose in life, as well as the emerging economies that depend on the work related to commodities in order to fuel an ever-greater demand for man's insatiable appetite for luxury. The Crocodile King is a novel about fashion, but more importantly it is a novel about what lies behind fashion, its appeal, both psychological and geopolitical, as well as its historical, even environmental contradictions.
