Book Synopsis The Effect of Ionizing Irradiation on Longevity by : John B. Hursh

Download or read book The Effect of Ionizing Irradiation on Longevity written by John B. Hursh and published by . This book was released on 1957 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the important late effects of ionizing radiation is the shortening of average length of life. Experiments on rats and mice have shown that for single sub-lethal doses of x-rays, this life shortening is 25 to 50% per 1000 roentgens, the proportional amount of shortenings increasing with dose size. For chronic irradiation an estimate is made of approximately 10% per 1000 r. Generalizations which summarize this experimental information are reviewed. Finally the possible significance of this effect for maximum permissible exposure levels is discussed.
