Book excerpt: Simon Gross (b. ca. 1711) and his brother, Theobald Gross, arrived at Philadelphia in 1741, with passengers from the Palatine area, Germany, and settled at Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He married three times and was the father of six children, 1742-1754. He probably died in Surry County, North Carolina. His son, Samuel Gross (1749-1831), a Revolutionary War soldier, married Elizabeth Shaffer (1753-1811) ca. 1771. They had seven children, 1774-1790. Samuel died at Manchester, Pennsylvania. He and his wife are buried in Quickel's Church Cemetery, Conewago Township, York County, Pennsylvania. Descendants listed, chiefly descendants of his sons, lived in Pennsylvania, New York, Maryland, California, and elsewhere.
