He brings to his subject some independent thought, as in his passage on the diminution of Orders upwards. He clearly felt that the expression of character in a building was as necessary as the Orders themselves, although he sets out to illustrate them as the first and chief grounds of architecture. He would like a building to be Doric, Ionic or Corinthian in character rather than to be an exhibition of all the Orders. When adding a special plinth, like the moulded riser of a step, under the complete pedestals of the Ionic and Corinthian he justifies himself as follows.
