Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to identify how the personal and systematic transportation resources in rural towns of one county in a northeastern state impacted JIW's efforts to meet probationary requirements. Qualitative data sources included interviews with five JIW and four probation officers. Quantitative data sources included the correctional and service mileage data of 23 rural JIW. Method of analysis for interview data was a grounded approach developed by Glaser and Strauss. Method of analysis for mileage data was a quasi-statistical approach developed by Becker. Data was understood using an interpretive descriptive framework developed by Thorne. Results supported established topics related to rural resource challenges and JIW's gendered needs. Results revealed new understandings: access to transportation affects JIW's ability to remain in rural towns, links exist between transportation and adverse relationships with unrelated males, and lack of transportation compromises JIW's rehabilitative goals. Findings suggest systemic interventions, including integrated caseload management systems and reversal of exclusionary transport policies. Implications for further research include: intercounty studies that compare degrees of systemic transportation interventions to correctional outcomes, and examinations of associations between transportation and rural JIW's relationships with related males and non-male individuals.
