Book excerpt: Violent extremism was not spread for free, it has cost trillions of dollars to support the radical activities in different contexts for which the money is being raised through different channels that are least to be tracked. To finance narratives and activities of extremism and violence, extremist groups preferably use illegal methods but also the legal ones. This paper reviews the shadow economy of violent extremism in the lens of charity that is often misused to finance operations of violent extremism under an umbrella of humanitarian organizations. For this purpose, reflections have been drawn using descriptive methods around the relevant content and theories from the academic and practice fields to understand religious and financial aspects.
